Many factors influence your choice of careers
Once you discover how your
temperament, interests,
and values interact,
you can focus your energies, set your goals, and pursue your dreams.
WHAT DO OTHERS EXPECT OF YOU?
Sometimes, your thoughts about which career path to take can be confused by the expectations others have for you. Your parents, teachers, and friends all have opinions about what you should do with your life. After a while, it becomes more and more difficult to separate what you really want from what others want you to do.
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT OF YOURSELF?
Have you set goals for yourself? How difficult will they be to reach?
Belief in yourself, hard work, and motivation will take you far. However, to have a dream and then set goals, you need to know what opportunities are out there.
When you were little, your ideas about what you might “be when you grew up” were shaped by the kinds of things you saw the people around you doing. Even today that may be true. Though you may be familiar with the jobs people in your family do, or visible jobs in your community, there are probably hundreds of jobs you’ve never heard of.
Start with your interests. Follow up your interests by going online, checking out books, talking to your family, teachers, and counselors. If you share your ideas and interests with them, they can help you find ways to learn more or get involved. Volunteer or do research in your area of interest. You’ll be surprised at what you learn and how that can impact your goals.
Once you begin this process, you can look closer at your values and personality to start discovering some good career choices for your future.
Learning more about yourself is just as important as learning more about the things you’re interested in. The more you know, the bigger your dreams can be.
